Frequently Asked Auto Shipping Questions
Shipping a vehicle doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re relocating, purchasing a vehicle from another state, sending a vehicle to a family member, or transporting a specialty vehicle, Allstates Auto Shipping (AAS) is here to help make the process simple and straightforward.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions customers ask about vehicle transportation.
1. How much does it cost to ship a vehicle?
Auto shipping rates vary based on several factors, including the pickup and delivery locations, vehicle type and size, vehicle condition, transport method, time of year, and current carrier availability.
Because every shipment is different, AAS provides quotes based on the specific details of your transport. Contact our team or submit a quote request for current pricing.
2. What is the difference between Open and Enclosed transport?
Open Transport is the most common and cost-effective method of vehicle transportation. Vehicles are securely transported on an open carrier and exposed to normal outdoor road conditions during transit.
Enclosed Transport provides additional protection inside a covered trailer and is often selected for classic, exotic, luxury, collectible, or high-value vehicles.
Our team can help you determine which option best fits your vehicle and transportation needs.
3. How long does vehicle shipping take?
Transit time depends primarily on distance, route, weather, traffic, carrier schedules, and other transportation conditions.
Many shipments are completed within approximately 3–10 business days, although longer or specialized routes may require additional time.
Pickup and delivery dates are estimates unless otherwise specifically agreed upon.
4. Do you offer door-to-door transport?
Yes. AAS offers door-to-door vehicle transportation throughout the United States.
The carrier will attempt to pick up and deliver your vehicle as close to the requested addresses as legally and safely possible.
Large transport trucks cannot always enter residential streets, gated communities, low-clearance areas, narrow roads, or locations with other access restrictions. When necessary, the driver will coordinate a safe nearby meeting location.
5. Is my vehicle insured during transport?
AAS works with licensed and insured motor carriers.
Carrier insurance information is available for review, and the vehicle should be inspected at both pickup and delivery. Customers should carefully review the Bill of Lading and document the vehicle’s condition.
Coverage is subject to the motor carrier’s insurance policy, terms, limitations, and exclusions.
6. Can I put personal belongings inside my vehicle?
We recommend keeping personal belongings to a minimum.
Some motor carriers may permit a limited amount of personal property inside the vehicle, subject to carrier requirements and applicable transportation regulations.
Personal belongings are generally not covered by the motor carrier’s cargo insurance. Always confirm any personal-item requirements before pickup.
7. Do you provide transportation for auto dealerships?
Yes. AAS works with dealerships, auctions, businesses, fleet operators, and other commercial customers requiring vehicle transportation.
Whether you need a single vehicle moved or assistance coordinating multiple units, our team can help develop a transportation solution based on your needs.
8. How does shipping to or from Alaska work?
Alaska vehicle transportation may involve a combination of over-the-road transportation and marine/barge service.
Depending on the origin and destination, vehicles may travel through designated ports before continuing to their final destination.
AAS coordinates the transportation process and provides customers with instructions regarding required documentation, vehicle preparation, port procedures, and other shipment requirements.
9. Are there additional costs for terminal or depot service?
Additional terminal, storage, port, or secondary transportation charges may apply in certain situations.
When specialized services are required, our team will explain applicable transportation arrangements and charges associated with your shipment.
10. Can you transport a vehicle that does not run?
Yes. AAS can arrange transportation for many inoperable and non-running vehicles.
Please let us know whether the vehicle starts, rolls, steers, and brakes. Special loading equipment may be required depending on the vehicle’s condition.
Providing accurate information helps us arrange the appropriate carrier and equipment for your shipment.
11. How far in advance should I arrange transportation?
We recommend arranging your shipment as early as possible, particularly when you have specific scheduling requirements.
However, expedited and last-minute transportation may also be available depending on the route and carrier availability.
12. What types of vehicles and equipment can AAS transport?
AAS can arrange transportation for many different types of vehicles and equipment, including:
- Cars

- Motorcycles
- ATVs and UTVs

13. Can I track my vehicle during transport?
Yes. Customers can receive shipment updates during the transportation process.
You may also use our Track My Ride feature when tracking information is available for your shipment.
If you have difficulty obtaining an update or tracking your shipment, contact AAS and a representative will assist you.
14. How should I prepare my vehicle for transportation?
Before pickup, we recommend that you:
- Remove unnecessary personal belongings.
- Leave approximately one-quarter tank of fuel.
- Disable alarms when applicable.
- Remove or secure loose accessories.
- Remove or deactivate toll tags when appropriate.
- Make sure the vehicle is accessible for loading.
- Document the vehicle’s condition with photographs.
- Inform AAS about modifications or mechanical problems that could affect loading.
Additional preparation may be required for specialty vehicles, motorcycles, boats, heavy equipment, or other unusual shipments.
15. Can weather affect my shipment?
Yes. Severe weather, road closures, traffic conditions, natural disasters, and other circumstances may affect pickup or delivery schedules.
Safety comes first. Motor carriers may adjust routes or schedules when conditions make transportation unsafe or impractical.
16. What if I need to change my shipping date or shipment information?
Contact AAS as soon as possible if your transportation details change.
We will work with you to update the shipment and accommodate scheduling changes when possible, subject to carrier availability and the status of your order.
17. What payment methods do you accept?
Payment arrangements may vary depending on the shipment, carrier, and services provided.
Your AAS representative will explain the available payment options and any applicable payment requirements before transportation.
